It's obvious once you know...

An intriguing photo (credit Adrian Borda) of what looks like the interior of a strange building:

Image
Spoiler:
It's actually the interior of a cello!

Re: On the PM.

I see the knives are out already among the multitude of contenders for the Tory leadership. I have occasionally seen it suggested that in any sane democracy, campaigning to become leader should result in automatic disqualification, because such ambitious people cannot be trusted. In the present poli...

Re: Brexit consequences

Perhaps the key finding is not about the brainpower of leavers and remainers but the risk of using referendums to decide complex issues. Many voters, the scientists conclude, “lack the skills to critically evaluate information . . . raising a fundamental question as to whether direct democracy in t...

Re: On the PM.

Thinking about it, the danger period for May (in terms of mental and physical health) seems most likely to come when she finally gives up and resigns. I suspect it's a bit like fighting in a war - the excitement and adrenaline rush keep soldiers going in battle. It's after they've left the army that...

Re: Tactical voting on Thursday.

I'm really hoping that at some point both the major parties will split under their own contradictions. But realistically, this is most likely to happen given a change from FPTP voting to a more proportional system.

Re: On surnames

Interesting indeed - I didn't know any of that! The Icelanders of course just add -son or -dottir to the father's name so as in the UK the mother's name disappears. It has occurred to me before that it would be fairer if, say, male children took the father's surname and females the mother's (althoug...

On surnames

A social issue that mildly intrigues me, although it might be too soon for this to arise, concerns the current fashion for surnames to be combined when people marry. What happens in the next generation, when (say) a Smith-Jones and a Grey-Green get married? Do they lump them all together to form a q...

Re: New Tory leader.

That raises an interesting point, as our exit from the EU is governed by Article 50, but I don't know that this covers the sort of situation we are in. Obviously, with a no-deal exit, there will be no transition period (unless the EU agrees to one) so some kind of notice will have to be given for pr...

Re: On the PM.

What I can't understand is that May still seems to want the job. I am amazed she hasn't suffered a nervous breakdown, given the level of stress she has been under.

Re: "Why You Can't Win An Argument With an Idiot".

I wonder how much of the research quoted involved women? I recall reading that women are far less likely to overrate their abilities than men. In fact, I understand there is a general problem with all sorts of research - medical as well as psychological - being heavily biased towards men (and typica...

Re: Great pics...great captions?

It appears that Tory party members (aka the Geriatrica) overwhelmingly prefer BoJo the Clown as their next leader, for some inexplicable reason. OTOH, the majority of Tory MPs can't stand him and believe he would make a terrible leader. So, the key question is: will the MPs dare to defy the wishes o...

There's something about "mysteries" like this that has a strong appeal - and made Dan Brown a rich man.
