Re: On the PM.

Among the newspaper observations concerning BoJo's tribulations I came across a comment that after frequent rows with the girlfriend, he would like a reconciliation with his wife: as "a friend" put it, he would like everything to go back to the way it was before. I assume that means with one wife an...

Re: On the PM.

Some wry amusement that after being carefully managed through the parliamentary selection process, with everyone subsequently saying that "the only person who can stop BoJo is himself" he immediately hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. I can't see this making much difference to his popular...

Re: Microplastics

I do recall reading that the vast majority of the plastic in the oceans comes from Asia. Whether they generate the rubbish themselves, or import it and then don't dispose of it properly, is a moot point.

Re: On the PM.

But even with pure PR the same issue occurs, just less so. There's going to be a range of numbers that result in the same number of seats. And exactly the same number of votes can get a party a different number of seats depending on how the rest of the vote is split. True, but I would say "very muc...

Re: On the PM.

Well, once candidate A scores more votes than Candidate B, then any further votes for Candidate A are wasted, as they have no effect on the outcome (same applies between B and C etc). Only some form of proportional representation ensures that all of the votes count.

Re: Microplastics

I seem to recall reading about someone who had the active element of a swipe card embedded under the skin so that they could just wave their hand at the reader. Presumably the active element of the reader could be similarly embedded, opening up all sorts of interesting possibilities for lap dancers....

Re: Brexit consequences

I've just caught a glimpse in passing of a Tory on Victoria Derbyshire's show being challenged over the plan to reopen the Withdrawal Agreement, which the EU has said is impossible. The response was something like "you have to believe that it's possible". In other words, if you wish really, really, ...

Re: On the PM.

I didn't watch either of the debates. Is that bad of me? Or is it reality TV with no relevance to my life? Five people in a national debate: In order to persuade a few hundred people who already know them well, to let them be one of the two people I'm not allowed to vote for, to lead the party I do...

Re: On the PM.

So Rory Stewart eliminated. So a great big BJ looking more and more likely as PM. Well, it appears that BJ's supporters used tactical voting to get rid of Raab (hence Stewart's sudden increase in supporters, most of which vanished immediately afterwards) and they are now going to try to prevent Gov...

The first two thoughts to strike the successful contender:

1. "Hooray, I've won! :yay

2. "Oh shit, now what...?" :???:

Re: Brexit consequences

I gather that the few Brussels EU people who could be bothered to watch the Tory leadership debate last night (they have other priorities) concluded that the Brexit proposals from the candidates were either old ideas which had been rejected, or new ones which wouldn't work. I can see that the Brexit...

It's going to take someone very special to see this through and none of these is special.

I don't think anyone is at the moment.
I agree, with both points.

Re: On the PM.

Well, Stewart survived the MP's vote remarkably well but then visibly lost interest during the BBC debate which was a complete shambles. I was hoping to see each candidate subjected to an expert grilling which would pin them down and not allow their usual vague statements to pass unchecked. Instead ...

Re: On the PM.

Despite the above, BoJo, Gove and Hunt supporters are reportedly panicking about the surge behind Stewart's bid. The Telegraph is even suggesting that Stewart might have been an MI6 spy - which might backfire, as it could boost his popular status no end. He would have to deny it, of course, but if h...
