Re: Brexit Plan B?

The latest lie by the Brexiters (including David Davis) is that if we crash out without a deal, we can negotiate a free-trade deal during the two-year transition period. :fp THE TRANSITION PERIOD IS PART OF THE DEAL, MORONS. NO DEAL = NO TRANSITION PERIOD! P.S. sorry for shouting, but my tolerance o...

Re: Brexit Plan B?

I suspect that if we did withdraw A50 until parliament agreed what Brexit means (apart from "Brexit") we would never re-submit it, 'cos they can't agree on anything. I remain convinced, as I have been saying for a long time, that a crash out "hard Brexit" will not happen. It can be deferred for a wh...

Re: Brexit Plan B?

Quote from The Times, 5pm today. European Union officials are examining plans to delay Brexit until 2020 after Germany and France indicated their willingness to extend withdrawal negotiations because of Britain’s political turmoil. Diplomats and officials are preparing a longer than envisaged exten...

Re: Brexit Plan B?

I gather that one German source was quoted as using a traditional proverb to justify accepting Nodexit:

"Better a horrible end than horror without end”.

Brexit Plan B?

In the light of today's developments, I think it's worth starting a new thread. So... the Maybill rejected by such a resounding total that it seems very unlikely that any deal will gain a majority in Parliament in the foreseeable future. Particularly since the EU has reaffirmed that it is not willin...

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

The more I learn about this issue, the more convinced I am becoming that every single option is completely unacceptable.

I'm not sure where that leaves me... :con

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

Is there in reality any form of second referendum which would work? Somehow I doubt it. Could be a 2 stage poll (on one ballot paper): 1. In or out? If "in" wins >50%, cancel Article 50. 2. If "out" wins, go on to stage 2: choose between Nodexit or Maybill (all papers counted, including those who v...

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

It looks as if next week might be more than usually "interesting" in political terms. Westminster's response to the pleas from business for certainty and the general population's wish that they would just get on with it (whatever "it" might be) is to get itself in ever-greater tangles and bitter div...

Re: Ultima Thule etc

I am no linguist, but as I understand it "th" is often pronounced "t" in Germanic languages, and if "e" is the final letter of a word it is always pronounced - but as "uh" rather than "ee". I recall a German athlete whose name was "Silke", invariably pronounced "silky" by British commentators - it w...

Re: New Years Resolutions

I'm one of the dinosaurs - I only ever read books (and paper magazines) and usually have one fiction and one non-fiction on the go at any one time. My resolution is to finish writing a book - one I've been working on for years - my magnum opus, a technical history of automatic cannon and their ammun...
