Re: Brexit consequences

But also, leavers are pointing out that as NONE of the project fear predictions have materialised everything's going to be OK. Largely true up to now, yes - but nothing has been finally decided yet. It's safe to predict that business confidence, inward investment etc will depend on the type of Brex...

Re: Brexit consequences

More on the BBC news website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43835934 No 10 says it is confident a deal can be done to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit despite signs of an impasse over the issue. The BBC understands UK plans to resolve the matter faced sustained criti...

Re: Brexit consequences

If the EU continues to back the Republic of Ireland and refuses to consider any hard border which would destroy the Good Friday agreement, while insisting on such a border between the EU and states outside it, the options are limited. The government will basically have to decide between two options ...

Re: Brexit consequences

Hardly a surprise - from the BBC News paper review: The Telegraph says it has learnt that the EU has comprehensively rejected British plans for avoiding a hard Irish border, in a move that casts serious doubt on the UK's ability to leave the customs union. It quotes senior EU diplomatic sources as s...

Re: Political superiority complex?

Hmm... well, it doesn't surprise me that people think their views are superior - after all, if they didn't, they'd presumably believe something else, would they not?

I suspect that social confidence is a factor. Those who lack confidence may be more likely to keep quiet about their beliefs.

Re: Mystery over village in Devon rising 2cm every year

As I understand it, no-one knows what was happening before the current radar studies began - maybe it was rising, maybe it was sinking, maybe it just stayed the same. Until the reason for the change is understood, it's anyone's guess. This study of micro-geomorphological change (to coin a snappy ter...

A fair point. I would generally put the second meaning under "politeness".

Would it be unreasonable to feel a tad sceptical about this explanation? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-43738022 Investigators discovered 540kg (1,191lb) of marijuana missing from a police warehouse in Pilar, north-west of Buenos Aires. The city's former police commissioner, Javier Sp...

Respect

I see that knife crime in London is up again, for all of the usual stupid testosterone-driven reasons involving "disrespect". It reminded me of this: Why should I respect you? What have you done, that I should respect you? Have you won some award, which needed much work and skill? Have you written a...

Re: Mystery over village in Devon rising 2cm every year

It seems to be genuine, to do with satellite measurements rather than anything that's visible on the ground: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-43721223 "Probably the weirdest example we've come across is the 2cm per year uplift at a place called Willand in Devon. It's a small place on th...

Re: Practising ‘factfulness’

I think that ties across into something else I read recently: that emotionally, we react much more strongly to losing something that we have, than when we fail to gain something of equal value that we don't have. In other words, we are much more sensitive to threats and loss than we are to improveme...

Re: visits to site

In recent times a first post typically got only half-a-dozen views, and I was worried that the forum was scarcely worth continuing, but over the past week or so some first posts have experienced 50-60 views. Quite a change!
