Re: How Democracies Die

A new book by Americans Levitsky and Ziblatt, subtitled 'What History Tells Us About Our Future'. I haven't read it - only a long review by Andrew Marr, so this is a second-hand review of a few key points: Worth noting that Andrew Marr has never been a fan of democracy. In his youth he was a Maoist...

Re: Brexit consequences

I see that some of the MPs who wanted our parliament to be sovereign "again" and for MPs to be able to make up their own minds; and who wanted a referendum so that "the people" could decide... Now don't want parliament to be sovereign, it should do as it is told; and don't want a "people's vote" ref...

Re: The commons debate

I can't be bothered to watch. I saw my MP (Sarah Jones, Labour) and her contribution was very sensible and well made (she's not voting for this mess). But I doubt she said anything different to dozens of other Labour MPs. If a single MP changes their mind over the days of debate it will be because o...

Re: Brexit consequences

I regard a second referendum as the lesser of evils. Yes. Nobody remotely sane and competent would get the country into this mess. But given that we are where we are... Hard Brexit or total remain will anger around half the population. Hard Brexit will probably anger the entire population in practi...

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

Tory minister Sam Gyimah resigns in protest at Theresa May's withdrawal deal. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/11/30/tory-minister-sam-gyimah-resigns-protest-theresa-mays-withdrawal/amp/?__twitter_impression=true And will there be more..? Robert Peston says that Gyimah resigned because he ...

Re: BBC stuff.

Having researched a bit; it seems the Vicar was a fake vicar and the BBC are now lying. Not a real vicar and the faith that they claim she belongs to isn't a real church.

Re: Brexit consequences

A relatively unbiased summary from Auntie: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46237012 What most of these summaries seem to miss is the "power grab" within the UK. There's lots of bits about setting up UK authorities to replace EU stuff. But without explaining who will make up these authorities, how wil...

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

Are you saying that Corbyn is now proposing no Brexit? Has he said so in plain words? If he hasn't he needs to. It's the inevitable consequence of Labour's sensible position. And I don't agree that he needs to. In the interests of national unity we need to carry the 52% with us. There's a really da...

There was an amusing detail in the news (if anything about this can be funny): the source of at least one of the major fires was an area for which the Federal government was responsible.
I understand that most of the fire areas are Federal land rather than private or state land.

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

Isn't everyone saying that? Not everyone. Not only do a substantial chunk of the Tory Party and the UKIPers still want a "hard" Brexit. But it seems likely that there are a handful of Labour MPs who are prepared to vote for May's crazy worst-of-both-options compromise. And lots of people kept doubt...

Re: A second referendum - or a general election?

More will resign. Some are missing from the front bench. Mordaunt has been playing with her phone; she'll resign. More importantly Corbyn has adopted the sensible position on this that I always knew was what we would end up with: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-46200010 Jeremy Corbyn say...

Re: Plug-in Hybrid vehicles - PHEVs

It would, of course be very helpful to car makers and buyers if the government could maintain a consistent policy with regard to its attitude to petrol, diesel, PHEV and electric vehicles.... The appropriate infrastructure could then be planned. Just as with other important issues, the Cabinet is h...

I rather liked this heron taken on my phone.
Very good. How close were you? I've taken loads of photos of herons over the years but they all come out as tiny little blobs in the middle of a great expanse of scenery.
