Jeremy Paxman's diplomat brother 'let embassy be used to sell bogus bomb detectors'
The younger brother of the Newsnight presenter was the ambassador to Mexico from 2005 until 2009.

During that time, scores of GT200 devices, produced by Bolton’s Global Technical Ltd, were sold to the Mexican government at a cost of up to $30,000 each.

Bolton, 47, claimed the machines were able to locate explosives, drugs, cash, tobacco and even ivory at distances of up to three miles. But in reality the detector was nothing more than a retractable antenna mounted on a plastic box, the court has heard.
Same sort of product but different company? :sh

I posted this once already. Where did it go? :ay

Giles Paxman is currently ambassador to Spain. He is being recalled prematurely and no-one seems to know why...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politic ... Spain.html
Mandrake can disclose that Giles, 61, has been recalled as Britain’s ambasador to Spain.
Although the Foreign & Commonwealth Office confirms that he will be replaced by Simon Manley, 45, it refuses to say what will become of Paxo junior.
He was summoned by the Spanish government last November because of escalating tensions over Gibraltar.
Don't blame me - I voted remain :con

Interesting. We've been at the sharp end, in the Canaries, of some major "reorganization" of consular services in Spain. We now come under a general heading of Southern Spain, and that has meant some staff moving around too. We've lost our consul on the spot, Maria Lang, who appeared to have been summarily sacked back in April. She was replaced by Steve Jones, but based in Malaga, and he had no sooner taken over than he was replaced by Charmaine Arbouin ... described by the FCO as having "20 years’ experience of managing people and resources in the public and not-for-profit sectors. She was previously a consultant to local and central government organisations in the UK, specialising in public sector performance improvement. She has also developed and managed customer contact services in Nottinghamshire. She has a degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Hull."

They're making a business of it, and Steve Jones was moved on so as to "take up a new role as Global Contact Centre Manager for the Foreign Office’s flagship Contact Centre programme. ... [and] manage the expansion of the highly successful Malaga Contact Centre – which will soon handle consular enquires from across the whole of Europe and Africa ... ".

Maybe real diplomats don't like it ... or aren't up to the new business model. Good job people in the Canaries have become used to little info and less support ...

edit: on topic ... :-? ... were Bolton and McCormick doing this together, or separately?

The style and wording of the FCO documents you quoted from makes me shudder. How low they have sunk....

Hello everyone,

Been busy for a while, hence my extended absence from these shores.

Hope all well and thriving. Who needs Spain?

Interested to see the info about Paxman minor being Ambassador to Mexico at the height of the GT200 sales.

To answer Dr S, McCormick worked as an agent for Bolton on the MOLE. After they fell out McCormick went on to 'invent' the ADE100/101 and then the ADE650/651.

A recent article in Business Week gives a reasonable history:

If you want to see latest from Bolton trial, involving dowsers appearing for the defence, please see here:

You may also be interested to know that it appears I may have upset some of our muslim brethren, and may shortly be joining Salman Rushdie with my very own fatwa. Techowiz was most upset and demanded one for him too. See here:

If you try to click on the above link you will find that the post is no longer there. I have removed it at the request of the Judge at the trial of Mr Gary Bolton on charges of fraud. The post will be re-published at the conclusion of the trial.

The jury will retire to consider their verdict today so hopefully it will not be long before you can read my words of wisdom :wry

In the meantime there are still a lot of jolly good posts to read. :beer
