Shambles Square, Manchester. Worth a visit if you're ever in my neck of the woods.

Ah yes, I remember them moving those buildings as part of the redevelopment of the centre after the IRA bomb in 1996.

There's been a lot of much-needed redevelopment in Manchester over recent years, Tony; the city is barely recognisable. The IRA weren't messing about with that bomb, I heard the blast in Stockport, miles away. Scary times.

As I recall, there was some regret at the time that the IRA hadn't used an even bigger bomb, then they might have taken out all of the Arndale Centre....

What I missed most was the old Corn Exchange, a huge space filled with quirky little stalls and redolent with the smell of joss sticks - now it's just another glitzy little upmarket shopping mall.

I think most Mancunians would agree that the Arndale Centre was a big mistake. Still, since that was built, developments have generally been of a far higher standard. The introduction of the Metrolink, (trams to you and me), has seen pedestrianisation of much of the inner city and that's a huge improvement.

Belgian wine? :sh

In a foreign country I'm all in favour of drinking whatever the locals drink. Except in Ireland, that is - can't stand Guinness...
