Laurel or Yanny?

Do you hear laurel or yanny?

I hear laurel, no question. I find it hard to imagine how anyone could hear "yanny". Apparently it's down to the way we interpret high and low frequencies (explained at the end of the clip). I presume it would follow that most old folks like me, whose hearing is a little tired at the top end, would hear laurel while youngsters with fresh ears would hear yanny. Unless, of course, the youngsters have been determinedly wrecking their hearing by listening to very, very loud music (or cinema sound - I find it painful to visit cinemas these days).

Very odd.

Yesterday I heard this on the TV - TVs have notoriously poor sound quality and I could only hear yanny.

Now - listening on my headphones it's laurel for certain.

Also listening on headphones, and it's definitely Laurel.

I listened to it via the built-in speakers in my iMac. Seemed very clear!

Just spoke to my BH and she definitely heard yanny with me the other day and again today on daytime telly - Loose Women or something.

I've just played it to her from the above link and she now hears laurel.

Weird.

I stumbled across a more detailed explanation, of sorts.
But how come some people hear “Yanny”, when it should be “Laurel”?

This may have to do with the ‘technical’ properties of the sound. Analysis of the frequencies in the sound suggests that the higher frequencies (>1000 Hz) are more like “Yanny," but the lower frequencies (<1000 Hz) are more like “Laurel." It could be that playing “laurel” over speakers and re-recording it introduced high-frequency noise in the recording, which emphasized the higher frequencies. Now some listeners (for instance, young adults vs. older adults) are simply better at hearing these higher frequencies, or weigh them more heavily in perception than others, leading ‘high-frequency’ people to report Yanny, where ‘low-frequency’ people hear Laurel.

New York Times has a little tool you can play with...

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/201 ... GwodY5IM8Q

It has a slider which slides between laurel and yanny and you can see where on the scale it changes for you.

It's different for me according to where I start and so in which direction I move the slider.

If I start at yanny and slide towards laurel it changes to laurel one gradation mark on the yanny side of centre.

If I start at laurel and slide towards yanny it doesn't change until I get nearly to yanny - so much nearer yanny than when going the other way although either way it's on the yanny side so I guess I'm more likely to hear laurel.

I'd be interested to know how it works for you.

Fascinating!

If I start in the middle (which is clearly laurel) and go towards yanny it changes two marks before reaching the yanny end. If I start at yanny and move towards the centre it changes to laurel four marks from the yanny end.

That's almost exactly the same as me.

It is very strange. Even when I get to the very right side, I actually hear "YERRIED", or something like. If I start at Yanny, I hear Laurel after only 2 steps to the left.

Interesting.

I guess all three of us are the other side of 50 (being a little generous I suspect - certainly in my case).

I wonder if someone younger would get a different result.

I'll see if I can find someone.

What happens if you go the other way from yanny to Laurel?
