It's a few years since I visited Antwerp and its fantastic railway station. I stumbled across this on YT and couldn't resist posting. Great fun.

This reminds of this: an extract from a BBC4 programme on clog dancing from about five years ago. I remember seeing it then - great fun indeed!

That looked like fun. Very good of the non-participants to stand aside so neatly.

I was referring to the clog-dancing flash-mob in the second message: no clogs = no dancing!

There have been quite a few at Liverpool Street Station in London over the years. It is particularly well laid out for flash mobs apparently.

It's a pity, really, that such activities are so rare. I have read (and I can well believe it) that communal singing and dancing are very good for people, individually and collectively. They strengthen social bonds and improve both mental and physical health and well-being. And they cost nothing. Yet they have almost disappeared from our culture. I wonder why?

Perhaps not quite the same but I would say that community choirs are having a renaissance at the moment- possibly due to the prominence of Gareth Malone.

Certainly I have friends and family who sing in choirs in their towns - and they're not really singers but nevertheless sound OK and enjoy it immensely.

Estonia provides a fascinating example of using communal singing for social purposes, and on a different scale to anyone else. For their regular festivals there is a vast outdoor amphitheatre near Tallinn which can accommodate an audience of 100,000 (about 10% of the population) who gather to listen to choirs of 20,000-30,000. Must be quite an experience.
